SPP Extends Memorandum of Understanding with Italy's Snam

Bratislava, 3 June (TASR) - State-owned gas utility SPP has extended the Memorandum of Understanding with Snam, a leading Italian gas infrastructure company, TASR learnt from SPP spokesman Ondrej Sebesta on Tuesday. The document, which was signed in 2023, will contribute to the continuation of the search for opportunities that could provide SPP with access to liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, regasification capacity at LNG terminals, storage capacity in Italy and potential involvement in the transportation of natural gas from Italy to Slovakia. "There are still significant technical constraints on the alternative gas transmission routes to Slovakia that we actively use, i.e. from Germany via Austria and the Czech Republic. These haven't yet been resolved and prevent a sufficient gas supply for several Central European countries in parallel. We are therefore continuing to work with our Italian partner to develop further options for transporting gas to Slovakia from the south, which we've already used on several occasions in the past. However, it remains true that any alternative route for gas supply to Slovakia is significantly more expensive than transporting gas via Ukraine due to transit fees," said SPP board chair and general director Vojtech Ferencz. am
