Bratislava, 31 May (TASR) - Slovakia has achieved its lowest-ever carbon footprint in energy production thanks to its high share of nuclear energy, which is recognised by the European Union as an environmentally friendly source, TASR has been told by the Office for the Regulation of Network Industries (URSO). According to preliminary 2024 national residual mix results, a significant reduction has been made in the country's carbon footprint. "I'm pleased that what we have long claimed is being confirmed. Thanks to nuclear energy, we're among the countries with the cleanest electricity production. This is good news for everyone who wants to live in a republic with cleaner air and a stronger economy," said URSO head Jozef Holjencik. The carbon footprint assessment takes into account CO2 emissions from producers, consumers and residual impacts. According to the office, Slovakia has significantly reduced its carbon footprint across all areas year-on-year, placing it among the top interconnected countries in the region. This also has a major impact on large companies, which must report reductions in their individual carbon footprints under the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), emphasised URSO. "For everyone in Slovakia, this means that we're reducing our carbon footprint, which helps the environment. With a cleaner energy mix, large companies will also face lower costs for purchasing green certificates, which could positively affect the prices of their products and services for consumers," added Holjencik. lin/df/am
