Stats: Volume of Cargo Transport Down More than 10 Percent y-o-y in 1Q25

Bratislava, 27 May (TASR) - The total volume of cargo transport in Slovakia in the first quarter of 2025 amounted to 44.9 million tonnes, which is a decrease of 10.5 percent year-on-year (y-o-y), the Statistics Office reported on Tuesday.
The overal result was chiefly influenced by drop in the volume of cargo transported by road transport, going down by 4 percent and a 13.4-percent decline of the volume of cargo transported by rail.
The smallest component, other freight transport, which includes water, air, pipeline transport and warehousing activities, posted a y-o-y fall of more than 40 percent in the first quarter.
Meanwhile, the number of transported passengers grew by 4 percent y-o-y to 185.9 million in the first quarter of this year. The current figure exceeded the one seen in the fist quarter of 2019 (the last first quarter before the coronavirus pandemic) by 5 percent.
Almost 126 million passengers used public city transport, an increase of 7.6 percent y-o-y. Their number was more than 30 percent higher when compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019.
Railway transport reported growth in the number of transported persons as well, going up 5 percent y-o-y to 18.2 million in the first quarter.
Meanwhile, the number of passengers using commuter and long-distance transport fell by 15 percent to 37.6 million. The current figure only makes up 60 percent of the number of passengers who used this kind of transport in the first quarter of 2019.
