Bratislava, 25 May (TASR) - The total of €1.34 million was collected during the 29th annual Daffodil Day, a fundraising organised by the League against Cancer, the league's CEO Eva Kovacova announced at a news conference earlied this week, adding that the definitive sum will be known after the SMS donations are calculated and added.
"It is with great gratitude, great humility, but also great responsibility that we say that we were surprised by this year's beautiful yield, which even surpassed last year's record sum. It's surprising for us, as we know how difficult the times we are living in are," said Kovacova, adding that Daffodil Day is once again proof that people still preserve the value of humanity and haven't given up on it.
The money is intended for cancer patients and their families. Several projects for cancer patients, launched by the League against Cancer, are covered from them. This year, their portfolio should be expanded to include a new education project for nurses in the field of psychology, said Kovacova. The goal is to improve communication with patients, respect their dignity and deal with them in a sensitive manner, including when it comes to providing information.
A total of 900,000 daffodils were distributed as a symbol of support for cancer patients during this year's Daffodil Day. The vast majority of the money obtained came in via cash donations collected by the 12,000 volunteers who went out onto the streets with money-boxes on Daffodil Day.
