Banska Bystrica, May 13 (TASR) - At the end of April the Office for Combating Organised Crime suspended the criminal investigation into the leak of the medical records of Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) following last year's assassination attempt on him, Ivan Vozar, spokesperson for the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Banska Bystrica, confirmed for TASR on Tuesday. "The investigator in the given criminal case suspended the proceedings on April 28, 2025 because it wasn't possible to determine facts justifying a prosecution against a specific person," stated Vozar. The criminal proceedings for the offence of unauthorised handling of personal data were initiated on May 17 of last year on the instructions of the district prosecutor in Banska Bystrica. This came in response to a patient record, allegedly belonging to Fico, which was spread on social media shortly after the assassination attempt and the prime minister's subsequent admission to Roosevelt Hospital in Banska Bystrica. The assassination attempt on the prime minister took place on May 15, 2024 following an away-from-home government session in the village of Handlova. The attacker, Juraj C., caused multiple serious injuries to Fico by shooting him at close range. Juraj C. is being prosecuted for the aggravated crime of a terrorist attack and, if convicted, might face a life sentence. The trial is expected to begin in July. mf/df
