Bratislava, May 8 (TASR) - Freedom and peace were dearly earned via the sacrifices of those who fought in the Second World War, and it is they who must be honoured and remembered, stated Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) leader Milan Majersky, who, alongside his colleagues, commemorated the 80th anniversary of the end of the war at the Liberation Memorial in the SNP Park in Zilina on Thursday.
Majersky noted that the Second World War claimed the lives of tens of millions. "They were young boys, sent to their deaths by powerful world leaders of the time for the sake of seizing power. They were also innocent suffering civilians, women and children – all of them victims of this terrible war. And it's to them that we've come to pay our respects," he emphasised.
The party leader also highlighted the current lack of empathy, efforts at cooperation and mutual understanding that could lead to a repetition of the dreadful scenario of a global conflict.
"We must not support aggressors and dictators in their attempts to expand their territory and power," he emphasised further, addressing criticism at Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD). "We clearly state that the premier shouldn't have gone to Moscow to celebrate the end of the Second World War while Russia is still attacking Ukraine. He isn't representing all Slovak people there," he said.
