Maluzina, May 6 (TASR) - Volunteers from all over Slovakia planted 10,500 new trees in the Low Tatra mountains near the village of Maluzina (Zilina region) on Tuesday. This is a new Slovak record when it comes to the number of trees planted in a single day. The event took place as part of the Water for Trees initiative. "Last year, the two millionth tree was planted as part of this project in the Tatras, so we're starting the third million, with 10,500 trees being planted today," said Book of Slovak Records founder Igor Svitok. State-run forestry company Lesy SR annually plants 14 million trees on average. "Today we planted beech, pine, larch and birch. "This composition should help make the forest more diverse, but most importantly more stable for future generations," said director of the company's Tatry branch Miroslav Priechodsky. According to Lidl Slovakia communications head Tomas Bezak, the main goal of the project is, as every year, to help plant as many trees in the Tatras as possible. "This year we donated 185,000 seedlings to the Tatra forests, of which we will plant 10,500," he added. ko/df
