Bratislava, May 6 (TASR) - Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) is demanding a unified response to US tariffs from the EU, but he himself is betraying its unity with his planned visit to Moscow, opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) leader Michal Simecka said in reaction to Fico's meeting with automotive industry representatives on Monday (May 5).
"Robert Fico is extending one hand to Brussels to ask for help for our carmakers, while showing a raised middle finger to our partners with the other hand. This is not the way to do foreign policy," said Simecka, calling it hypocritical of Fico. "If he demands a unified response to US tariffs from the EU, a response that would help our employees, then he cannot, on the other hand, break European unity by going to Moscow to bow down to a war criminal," stated the PS leader.
"I am calling on you, Mr. premier: don't go to Moscow, since by doing so you are betraying not only our geopolitical interests and security, but ultimately also our economic interests," added Simecka.
Following his meeting with automotive industry representatives, Fico said that the government plans to focus on using EU funds to support the automotive sector, as well as possibly introducing EU-level measures such as car scrappage schemes.
