Martin, May 2 (TASR) - On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Slovakia's liberation and the end of the Second World War, Matica Slovenska (MS) is organising a commemorative event on May 7 at its headquarters in Martin, dedicated to the memory of its members who actively participated in the anti-fascist resistance and the Slovak National Uprising (SNP), TASR has learnt from MS Secretary Jan Seman. The secretary noted that many of them [the participants] were prominent figures in Slovak cultural and public life. "Some worked in illegal groups directly within Matica, others joined partisan units or took part in anti-regime radio broadcasting or in the Matica theatre as part of the cultural resistance. Some were killed, others were imprisoned, tortured, or deported," said Seman. MS will honour in memoriam several individuals who were active in the resistance. "The aim of the event isn't only to commemorate the heroism of individuals, but also to highlight the importance of civic courage, cultural identity, and historical memory in the context of today's society," added Seman. lin
