Fiacan: Addition of Supreme Court Judge in Country's Highest Interest

Kosice, April 29 (TASR) - Constitutional Court chair Ivan Fiacan has once again pointed out the need to complete the Constitutional Court with a 13th judge, which the court has been missing for a year and seven months, TASR learnt on Tuesday. "I think this issue is in the highest interest of this country and the people who live in it," he told reporters on Tuesday, adding that he's considering asking to speak in Parliament, as he did in 2019, when he also appealed to MPs to elect the necessary number of candidates for constitutional judges. There's been a vacancy at the Constitution Court since September 2023, when Jana Lassakova stepped down. "The current situation is that Parliament is currently unable to elect two candidates, one of whom the President [Peter Pellegrini] could appoint as a judge of the Constitutional Court," stated Fiacan, pointing out that during this election term, there have even been considerations about increasing the number of constitutional judges. "However, we see that the relevant political powers are unable to properly fulfil this constitutional obligation even with the current number of constitutional judges," he added. am
