Bratislava, February 4 (TASR) - The only living space for Slovakia is in its membership of the European Union and NATO, but in a new form, stated Slovak National Party (SNS) leader Andrej Danko after a meeting on the direction of foreign policy at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, adding that SNS supports reforming the EU and cooperation between member states regarding security matters.
"The good times in the European Union are over. We need to face the truth that a lot of work lies ahead, and the only viable space for Slovakia is membership of the [European] Union, membership of NATO, but in a new form," stated Danko.
According to Danko, people can't overlook the voices of those who say that the EU is no longer the same as it was when Slovakia joined. He also spoke about NATO, which, in his view, often follows "the political adventures of the United States", making decisions that may not always align with the wishes of EU-member states. He stated that the European Union must tackle challenges such as competitiveness. He also highlighted the issue of cooperation between European armies.
Danko expressed his desire for the president to call for roundtable discussions more frequently on topics that are needed to unite society.
After Tuesday's meeting with the leaders of the coalition parties Smer-SD, Voice-SD and SNS, and the opposition KDH, President Peter Pellegrini gave assurances that no one desires or is preparing for Slovakia's exit from the European Union and NATO. The leaders of PS and SaS didn't accept the invitation to the roundtable discussion.
