President: Coalition Not Seeking Slovakia's Exit from EU and NATO

Bratislava, February 4 (TASR) - President Peter Pellegrini, speaking after his meeting with the leaders of coalition parties Smer-SD, Voice-SD, the Slovak National Party (SNS) and the opposition Christian Democrats (KDH) on Tuesday, gave assurances that neither the coalition party leaders nor the chairman of the opposition KDH want or are preparing for Slovakia to leave the European Union and NATO. Pellegrini stated that he therefore considers one of the reasons for regular demonstrations — fears that Slovakia may leave the EU and NATO — to be irrelevant. "From this joint meeting of ours it became very clear that no one, neither from the coalition parties nor the chairman of the opposition KDH, had any interest in Slovakia exiting the European Union and NATO. No one is planning such a departure, no one is organising it, and no one even anticipates Slovakia seeing its future outside of these two organisations," said the president. He also stated that everyone recognises the challenges and issues that the EU and NATO will have to face in the future. "Because we're living in very turbulent times. Geopolitical shifts are occurring, and political systems are changing," he said. The president stated that the roundtable discussion was convened primarily at the request of opposition parties KDH, Progressive Slovakia (PS), and Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), which expressed concern over the development of Slovakia's foreign policy. He was also prompted by the fact that fears of Slovakia leaving the EU or NATO have become a motive for protests. "If people wish to express their disagreement with something in this country, they have every right to do so, but it's unnecessary if they're expressing opposition to Slovakia's departure from the EU or NATO because that's not true," he claimed. The president expressed appreciation for the fact that KDH leader Milan Majersky attended the meeting. He views the refusal to attend by the leaders of PS (Michal Simecka) and SaS (Branislav Groehling) as a sign of their immaturity and unwillingness to take responsibility for leading the country. Pellegrini expressed his commitment to organising further roundtable discussions on the current challenges that Slovakia is facing. lin/df
