Government Approves Termination of Slovak-Hungarian Citizenship Convention

23. októbra 2024 12:24
Bratislava, October 23 (TASR) - The government on Wednesday approved the termination of a more than 60-year-old convention on the regulation of certain citizenship issues between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Hungarian People's Republic. The treaty prevents children born to a citizen of Hungary and a citizen of Slovakia from adopting both citizenships, which according to the Slovak Interior Ministry is in violation of the Constitution, the European Union's Convention on Citizenship, to which Slovakia is a party, and Article 15 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Hungary has considered the convention null and void since 1999, noted the ministry. The Czech Republic terminated its validity in 2000. Slovakia should cease to be bound by the convention 12 months after Hungary receives notice of termination. zel/df
