'Slovakia' Party: Food Prices Went Up This Month Even More

Bratislava, May 8 (TASR) - The opposition's 'Slovakia' party compared food prices in Slovakia and Poland also in May to reflect on the 2023 election promises made by the governing coalition to bring down food and fuel prices. Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Julius Jakab and Michal Sipos of 'Slovakia' party reported that same foods from same producers cost €75.15 in Slovakia and €45.63 in Poland on May 6. Hence, the price gap unfavourable to Slovakia has increased month-on-month from 50 percent to almost 65 percent, said Jakab. "The difference from what was seen in previous month is surprising, as it's even worse than we expected," claimed Jakab. Specifically, wieners were sold in Slovakia at prices 160 percent higher than in Poland, bread higher by 154 percent, tomatoes higher by 224 percent and carrots higher by 151 percent. The lawmakers underlined that they bought food products of the same quality and quantity and from the same producers. A factor driving prices up in Slovakia is its higher VAT tax, but even when the VAT is deducted from the sums, the prices stay higher by more than half. Sipos claimed that the Government has given up on its purported fight against high food and fuel prices. mf
