Police to Press Charges Against Woman Over 2022 Handlova Apartment Building Fire

Handlova, May 6 (TASR) - Police ended the investigation into the 2022 fire in the apartment block in Handlova that had made headlines in Slovakia and proposed to press charges of public endangerment against a 67-year-old woman, TASR learnt from Trencin police's social network post on Monday. "The investigator collected evidence that the accused caused the fire in an apartment block in Handlova on June 15, 2022, out of negligence, with the fire killing four individuals and causing large scale damage," reads the post. If found guilty, the woman might face four to ten years in jail. The fire claimed lives of a married couple, aged 46 and 48, as well as two women aged 40 and 65. The damage to the building was quantified at more than €320,000, with 42 out of 55 flats damaged. The town declared a state of emergency after the fire and opened a transparent account to help the inhabitants. Aid was provided also by President Zuzana Caputova, the Trencin region and the then-government. The building has already been reconstructed. mf/mcs
