Judicial Council to Elect Candidates for Judges of European Courts on June 18

Bratislava, May 5 (TASR) - The Judicial Council should elect a candidate for a judge of the General Court of the European Union and at the same time three candidates for judges of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on June 18, the Judicial Council's Office has announced on its website. The Judicial Council elected the candidates last September, however, the government turned down these proposals last week. "Those eligible to submit proposals for individual candidates have until May 31 to do so," reads the announcement. Before the election itself takes place, the electoral commission of the Judicial Council will examine whether the candidates meet the prerequisites to be elected. The term in office of 26 national judges of the General Court of the EU expired on August 31, 2022. Slovakia was represented for two terms by Juraj Schwarcz. The General Court of the EU is resided in Luxembourg. Judges are elected for a six-year term. The term in office of the judge currently representing Slovakia at the Strasbourg-based ECHR, Alena Polackova, will expire on December 28, 2024. The Council of Europe should elect a new ECHR judge for Slovakia from three candidates submitted by the Slovak Government. ko
