KDH: Assistance with Mortgages Can Help Banks More Than People

Bratislava, December 1 (TASR) - The opposition Christian Democrats (KDH) don't agree with the government's draft programme to subsidise mortgage loans as the aid with mortgages can help banks more than people because banks can increase interest rates, since clients won't feel it to such a significant extent, KDH economic expert Jozef Hajko stated on Friday in response to the proposal to amend several laws in relation to assistance with repayment of housing loans approved by the government on Wednesday (November 29). Hajko also drew attention to the fact that an analysis on the basis of which the government arrived at the numerical parameters is missing. "With the increased tax bonus, the document merely states that the negative impact on municipalities will be €15 million next year. Hard-hit municipalities and regions will lose more money," said Hajko. KDH also criticises the government for not communicating with the banks and ignoring the documents of Slovakia's central bank (NBS). The state is expected to pay approximately €15 million for assistance with increased mortgage repayments for 2023, the amount is then supposed to go up to €64 million next year. am/mcs
