TASR brings a quick morning overview of the most important events seen in Slovakia on the previous day (Thursday, May 25): BRATISLAVA - Checks on Slovakia's borders with Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and at international airports, which have been resumed on a temporary basis until June 8, are not related solely to the Globsec conference, but also to other events, caretaker Premier Ludovit Odor said during the regular Question Time in Parliament on Thursday, when answering a question by MP Romana Tabak (Independent). According to Odor, the aim of the checks is to monitor the situation and to have forces ready to intervene if necessary. "It's an interplay of several circumstances," said the premier. He referred to his conversation with Police Corps president Stefan Hamran, who is particularly concerned about the meeting of the Hells Angels motorcycle club....Some other events will take place as well, such as triatlone races. BRATISLAVA - Ex-premier Eduard Heger has called on caretaker Prime Minister Ludovit Odor to follow through with an agreement with local governments concerning an aid scheme. According to Heger, there are unspent funds from a €200-million package to compensate for increased charges, and the former government prepared a draft agreement for redistributing the money among municipalities and towns. "The agreement was prepared, and I handed it over to Premier Odor," claimed Heger, noting that it would make it possible to redistribute €54 million by June 30, and a further €54 million by the end of the year. BRATISLAVA - Reacting to ex-premier Eduard Heger's call on caretaker Prime Minister Ludovit Odor to follow through on a previously prepared agreement with local governments concerning an aid scheme, Independent MP Richard Rasi, who is affiliated with the Voice-SD party, stated on Thursday that Heger is now pretending to be an opposition politician. "Heger is posing as an opposition politician, who, without a shred of shame, is calling on the caretaker prime minister to redistribute €108 million among local governments as promised. The increased tax bonus alone, which Heger and [OLaNO leader] Igor Matovic are boasting about, has robbed local governments of more than €300 million this year. And local governments have to get this money back from people so that they can provide basic services," said Rasi, noting that Heger was responsible for the state treasury as premier and finance minister. BRATISLAVA - The opposition Smer-SD party questions the investigation into the murder of journalist Jan Kuciak. According to it, the police haven't dealt with suspicions regarding the possible involvement of tax fraudsters about whom Kuciak wrote, Smer-SD leader Robert Fico and party presidium member Robert Kalinak told a news conference on Thursday. "Even murderer [Zoltan] Andrusko was directly connected to groups around VAT fraudsters through his livelihood. Those groups also coincide with some of the names of today's plea-bargain seekers," stated Kalinak. BRATISLAVA - OLaNO leader Igor Matovic urged Smer-SD chair Robert Fico to report the name of journalist Jan Kuciak's and his fiancee Martina Kusnirova's murderer to law enforcement authorities, TASR learnt on Thursday. Matovic spoke in response to Fico's statement from the Smer-SD 2022 party congress, according to which Fico knows the identity of the murderer. "If you said, 390 days ago, that you knew who the murderer was, you were legally obligated to take action and report the name of the murderer to law enforcement," Matovic stated at a press conference. BRATISLAVA - Had a general election taken place in May, it would have been won by Smer-SD on 21.3 percent of the votes, according to a recent poll carried out by NMS Market Research on behalf of Sme daily. Smer would have been followed by Progressive Slovakia on 14.2 percent and Voice-SD on 14 percent of the votes. WARSAW/BRATISLAVA - The situation in our region calls for more intense cooperation between Slovakia and Poland also in the security sphere, chief of Slovak diplomacy Miroslav Wlachovsky declared after meeting his Polish counterpart Zbigniew Rau in Warsaw on Thursday, TASR learnt from the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry press department on the same day. Both ministers discussed current issues in bilateral ties, the development of cooperation in regional groups, including the Bucharest Nine (B9) or the Three Seas Initiative, and security issues related to the war in Ukraine and the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius in July. ko
