Monitor: Nad: Slovak MiG-29 Jets Not in Ukraine Yet

(Markiza, Na telo, February 26) The Slovak MiG-29 fighter jets are not in Ukraine yet and if a specific deal is clinched, a proposal to that effect will be submitted to the Government and Parliament, interim Defence Minister Jaroslav Nad (OLaNO) declared on TV Markiza's politics talk show 'Na telo' (Tough Questions) on Sunday. House Vice-chair Juraj Blanar (Smer-SD), also on the show, fundamentally refuses any supplies of arms to Ukraine. Nad pointed out that the MiGs are no longer of any use to the Slovak Armed Forces, and keeping them grounded comes at a significant cost. By giving them away, the state could receive €150 million. Not all MiGs are flightworthy, but Ukrainians have their own facilities, capable of repairing and modernising them. Nad rejected Blanar's claims that providing the MiGs to Kiev would be hypocritical and retorted that if the Smer-SD had been in power, it would have sold off the obsolete military hardware at a fraction of its value to oligarchs. Nad perceives the Chinese peace proposal for Ukraine as pro-Russian, yet believes that it's necessary to keep lines of communication with Beijing open. According to Blanar, it is hypocritical to supply arms into the conflict that the society rejects and even earn profits off it. He underlined that the interim Government also lacks any legitimacy to make such decisions and the Cabinet is drawing Slovakia into the conflict. Blanar advocates "peaceful" solution to the war. mf
