Bratislava, February 6 (TASR) – This year's January in Slovakia was one of the most extreme in the history of meteorological measurements in terms of high temperatures, for example, the lowest number of frosty days in recent years was recorded, the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMU) reports on its website. "Only four [frosty days] were recorded in Somotor [Kosice region] this January, which reached a new Slovak extreme of the lowest number of frosty days in January at one of our climatology stations at least since 1961," they said, adding that the lowest January number of frosty days in the last 152 years was recorded in Hurbanovo (Nitra region). The average January air temperature at Kosice airport reached the highest values in the last 102 years. The previous highest value was surpassed by one degree Celsius. In the case of the highest average monthly minimum air temperature (average of daily minimums in the month), a new extreme was recorded in January at the largest set of climatology stations. "At several of our longest-running stations, the new record value is up to two degrees Celsius higher than the previous one - this applies to Kosice-airport, Somotor [Kosice region], Medzilaborce and Kamenica nad Cirochou [Presov region] stations," they added. am/mcs
