Banska Bystrica, August 14 (TASR) - The burnt down village of Kaliste (Banska Bystrica region) is a place of immense heroism in the heart of Slovakia, Prime Minister Eduard Heger (OLaNO) said during the commemorative event called Meeting of Generations in Kaliste on Saturday (August 13). "Residents of the village laid down their lives, stood up to evil," stressed Heger, adding that the desire for peace is much more intense now, as "we see the war in the country of our neighbours, Ukraine". Parliamentary Chair Boris Kollar (We Are Family), who also attended the event, stated that a nation that doesn't recall its history has not future. He stressed the importance of commemorating such events. According to Kollar, many people of the young generation don't know what happened in Kaliste. "If we won't commemorate it, the youth won't be interested in it, either, and won't value our history," he said. Kaliste was burnt down on March 18, 1945. German units killed 39 people, including locals and sick and wounded partisans outside the village. Today, the village is a national cultural monument administered by the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) Museum in Banska Bystrica. ko
