SUKL: Nobody Told Us that Testing of Sputnik V Would Violate Contract

Bratislava, April 8 (TASR) - The Slovak State Institute for the Supervision of Medicines (SUKL) said on Thursday that it wasn't told by anyone in authority that the testing of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine by the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) would constitute a violation of the contract with the Russian producer. "SUKL strongly protests against misleading statements made today by the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) concerning the laboratory testing of batches of the Sputnik V vaccine imported to Slovakia," said SUKL spokesperson Magdalena Jurkemikova. She asserted that SUKL doesn't know the content of the classified contract signed between RDIF and the Slovak Government. SUKL noted that an official laboratory network supervises the quality of vaccines registered in the EU, while Sputnik V has been registered neither in Slovakia, nor in the EU, with the Health Ministry having permitted its use by bypassing the registration process. "SUKL asked 30 official laboratories for the supervision of medicines and vaccines in the EU and an accredited laboratory of the SAV's Biomedical Centre for co-operation," said Jurkemikova, adding that all the afore-mentioned EU labs were busy, so the vaccine was eventually checked by the SAV. Russian agency RIA Novosti earlier reported that the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) asked Slovakia to return a batch of the Sputnik V vaccine. RDIF allegedly sent a letter to the Slovak Government on Tuesday, "requesting the vaccine be returned due to multiple violations, so it can be used in other countries". Slovak Finance Minister Igor Matovic (OLANO), who as prime minister in early March arranged the purchase of the Sputnik V vaccine from Russia, announced from his trip to Moscow on Thursday that he was told there that Slovakia should return the vaccine and the relevant contract should be terminated. bub/mcs
