Fico Criticises Coalition for Breaking Promises Regarding Migration Policy

Bratislava, January 26 (TASR) - The opposition Smer-SD party held a news conference on Tuesday to criticise the governing coalition for its pre-election promises and lies regarding the migration policy, objecting to Jan Orlovsky's appointment for the post of the Interior Ministry's Migration Office chief. According to Smer-SD leader Robert Fico, Orlovsky for many years represented a foundation presenting views on migration that are not in the interest of Slovakia. "It's a nomination against the interests of this state," stated Fico, adding that Orlovsky's appointment opens new directions in the field of migration policy. He expects Parliamentary Chair Boris Kollar (We Are Family) and Vice-premier Richard Sulik (Freedom and Solidarity/SaS) to comment on the issue, as they were refusing mandatory migration quotas before the election. Fico also recalled the Parliament's resolution from 2015, which clearly says that Slovakia can never agree to mandatory quotas. The Smer-SD caucus will support a draft constitutional law on shortening the election term presented by Independent MPs around Peter Pellegrini, said Fico. However, he doesn't expect the bill to find sufficient support. Therefore, Smer-SD intends to continue with the referendum initiative. Its representatives held their next round of talks with organisations that might support the referendum. Fico talks about two variants - the collection of signatures during the state of emergency, which will be more difficult and the collection of signatures once it is over, which would be easy. Smer-SD wants to act so that signatures are collected and delivered to President Zuzana Caputova as soon as possible. "The atmosphere in society is as it is. People are frustrated and angry because this governing coalition has deceived them," noted the Smer-SD leader, recalling election promises given by the coalition. "It gained support from the public based on lies and deceptions," he added. ko/mcs
