Vysoke Tatry/Liptovsky Mikulas, January 25 (TASR) - Tourism giant Tatry Mountain Resorts (TMR) is to lay off 260 employees, company communication manager Marian Galajda told TASR on Monday, adding that TMR is responding in this way to closed operations and the complicated situation in tourism caused by the coronavirus crisis.
The collective redundancies should affect 180 employees working in mountain resorts, water parks and management. "Another group consists of 80 employees who are terminating their work in the company due to the end of a fixed-term employment contract, the end of a probationary period or retirement," said Human Resources head at TMR Marek Schwarz.
The company operates in four European countries - Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland and Austria. According to TMR Board chair Igor Rattaj, governments in these countries are different in their support of tourism. "In some countries there are measures that apply and work, in some the rules change every now and then, their implementation costs you a lot of money that no one will return to you, and even so, they'll eventually shut you down. We must therefore behave as responsibly as possible, saving on expenditure, even at the cost of unpopular measures. If we stabilise the company now, it'll be easier for us to breathe into the time and projects that will come after the corona crisis," said Rattaj.
Prior to the coronavirus crisis, TMR employed almost 3,500 people in all countries. Galajda added that following the announced redundancies in Slovakia, TMR will have 1,100 employees, of whom 785 will be in its Slovak operations.
