Bratislava, July 11 (TASR) - The number of inhabitants in Slovakia has increased by 37 percent over the past 60 years, however, the growth rate is declining, TASR learnt from the Statistics Office on the occasion of the World Population Day on Thursday. The authority further stated that while in 1959 Slovakia had less than four million inhabitants, it was by 1.4 million more last year. "The population growth has been higher over the past six decades than in most neighbouring Eastern European countries. For example, Hungary and Bulgaria even reported a slight drop in population," said the office. The Statistics Office noted that 5.4 million people live in Slovakia at present, and Slovak citizens living in their mother country make up 1 percent of the European Union's population and 0.07 percent of the Earth's population. According to the UN, more than 512 million people live in the EU and more than 7.6 billion people on Earth (all data for 2018). The office provided the information in connection with the World Population Day, which is commemorated by the UN on July 11. am
