Brussels/Washington, May 15 (TASR) - Vice-president of the European Commission for the Energy Union Maros Sefcovic was the first foreign national to be invited on board the US Presidential Special Air Force One during President Donald Trump's term of office. Sefcovic along with the US president went on a working trip on Tuesday from Washington to Hackberry, Louisiana, where a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal to Europe is located. "The European Union and the USA are partners and allies, while by launching an LNG terminal in Louisiana we're starting a new stage in our strategic co-operation," said Sefcovic in a press release, specifying that the Cameron LNG terminal will contribute to higher EU energy security, including Slovakia, as this will enrich the gas supply. "Through new infrastructure, including gas pipelines and LNG terminals, we're increasing competition in the market, which we expect will reduce gas prices. This was particularly important for Central and South-eastern Europe, where we also supported gas interconnection projects between Poland and Slovakia, or an LNG terminal in the north of Poland. So Slovakia, too, should have different gas sources: Russian gas flowing through Ukraine, Norwegian gas flowing through the Baltic gas pipeline and liquefied gas coming through Poland," said Sefcovic. The Slovak EU commissioner claims to have spent about six hours on Air Force One that allowed him to openly talk about a number of important topics directly with President Trump as well as with his team members. "I appreciate the generous welcome by President Trump on board Air Force One. His approach was very natural and open, he likes discussions, he's interested in other people's opinions. Thanks to this atmosphere we could discuss a number of topical issues," he said. According to him, they also touched on the topic of intensified relations between the US administration and Central and Eastern Europe, even in the context of the recent successful visit by Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini (Smer-SD) to the White House. am/mcs
