Brussels/Bratislava, November 19 (TASR-correspondent) - Slovakia's upcoming presidency of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) as well as the UN Global Compact on Migration were the main topics of a meeting between Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak (a Smer-SD nominee) and chief of European diplomacy Federica Mogherini in Brussels on Monday. "The main topic we discussed was Slovakia's upcoming OSCE presidency and the possibility of co-operation between the OSCE and the European Union," said Lajcak, adding that in June the EU and the OSCE signed an agreement on closer co-operation. Lajcak and Mogherini also talked about the UN Global Migration Compact, a document that is being widely discussed both in Europe and in Slovakia at the moment. Lajcak pointed out that the EU played an important role in negotiating the document. "All our comments, including those of Slovakia and those of the EU, have been taken into account in the text," said Lajcak. "We don't like it that this issue is being exploited by populists, xenophobes and nationalists who are spreading hoaxes and untruths about this document. They are doing it only to increase their own popularity," he said. The UN adopted the document on migration in 2017, at the time when Lajcak served as the president of the UN General Assembly. The main goal of the 34-page document is to help better organise migration flows and strengthen migrants' rights. Meanwhile, some countries including Australia, Austria, Hungary and the USA have already announced their withdrawal from the compact, with other countries planning to follow their steps. The junior coalition Slovak National Party (SNS) is strongly against Slovakia signing the UN document with the senior coalition Smer-SD party as well as the Opposition parties Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) and We Are Family having expressed their reservations about the document as well. tz/mcs
