KDH: With His Comments on Referendum, Premier Undermines Slovakia's Interests

Bratislava, 7 November (TASR) - Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) is "insanely cynically" damaging the country's interests with his remarks about the referendum on Slovakia's accession to the European Union having been rigged, Mario Marcinek of the opposition Christian Democrats (KDH) told TASR on Saturday, adding that he's putting everyone at risk simply to halt the defection of his party's voters to extra-parliamentary far-right Republic.
"When, without a shred of evidence, he casts doubt on the referendum on Slovakia's accession to the European Union, he's behaving in a manner utterly unworthy of a premier. We regard the questioning of one of the most important democratic decisions in our history as the height of political irresponsibility, and the prime minister is thereby moving ever closer to the realm of disinformation," stated the opposition party, adding that it expects Fico to continue staging such absurd theatrics right up until next year's parliamentary election.
On Friday (6 November), during a discussion with former Czech president Vaclav Klaus, Fico claimed that the 2003 referendum on Slovakia's accession to the European Union wouldn't have been successful had it not been rigged. "It was so close that, in my opinion, some adjustments were made to ensure the result was as it should be," he opined.
