President: Support for Slovaks Living Abroad Must Be State's Priority

Bratislava, 30 October (TASR) - Slovaks living abroad represent significant potential for Slovakia, and supporting them should be among the state's priorities, said President Peter Pellegrini in his opening address at the 17th permanent conference called 'The Slovak Republic and Slovaks Living Abroad 2026', subtitled 'Strong Roots, Proud Hearts'. Pellegrini commended the work of expatriate associations and organisations that help Slovaks abroad to build communities, maintain mutual contacts and preserve culture and traditions. He also highlighted their activities in folklore, education and teaching the Slovak language to children and younger generations. "I want to thank all representatives of our expatriate associations and various organisations for creating an environment in which Slovaks in other countries around the world don't feel alone," said Pellegrini. Connecting Slovaks whose families have lived abroad for several generations with those who left only recently is also important, said Pellegrini, adding that they should be united by their shared origins, language and ties to their homeland, without people being divided into long-established and newly arrived expatriates. According to the head of state, Slovaks abroad can also contribute towards representing Slovakia around the world and building its international relations. "We should support our compatriots in becoming Slovakia's natural ambassadors around the world, and also look for ways to fully tap their potential," stressed Pellegrini. He also pointed to the need for more substantial financial support for Slovaks living abroad, recalling that during his tenure as prime minister in 2018 and 2019 the cabinet doubled the budget for expatriate activities. However, there's still room for improvement when compared to neighbouring countries, he said. According to Pellegrini, support doesn't necessarily have to take the form of funding. He referred to the transport of books and educational materials when cabinet members go on foreign trips, as well as the sending of folklore experts to help expatriate ensembles to preserve Slovak traditions. "They can be of significant support to folk ensembles, children and adults alike in reviving and preserving Slovak traditions," added Pellegrini. jrg/df
