Celadice, 4 October (TASR) - An 18-year-old man who threatened a nine-grader outside a primary school in the village of Celadice in Nitra region while holding an axe has been remanded in custody, spokesperson for the Nitra Region Police Tomas Havetta told TASR on Sunday.
"The man who made threats with an axe in Celadice was remanded in custody by a judge on Sunday afternoon," he stated.
The young man, who faces a charge of making dangerous threats, brandished an axe at one of nine-graders outside a primary school on 10 September. He threatened to come to the pupil's home and kill him if he didn't turn up at an agreed location that evening. He subsequently threatened to bring the axe to the school as well. Celadice mayor Peter Pukan learnt of the incident after being informed by the pupils' parents. After reviewing footage from the village's CCTV cameras and a video recorded on a mobile phone by one of the pupils, the mayor filed a criminal complaint on 22 September.
After the criminal complaint was filed, the mayor observed no action on the part of the police until 1 October, when the Prosecutor-General's (PG) Office also became involved in the case, which had received media attention. Prosecutor-General Maros Zilinka instructed the director of the PG criminal division to examine the timeliness and lawfulness of the police's and prosecution service's handling of the case.
The police subsequently reported that they had acted promptly and thoroughly as soon as the offence was reported and had been actively dealing with the matter. They stated that, during the course of the proceedings, objective circumstances arose which necessitated further procedural steps and the verification of new facts. At the same time, the Nitra Region Police ordered an internal review of the matter, focusing on identifying any shortcomings and verifying compliance with the relevant procedures.
