Bratislava, 1 October (TASR) - Leader of the extra-parliamentary Republic party Milan Uhrik commended the decision by Smer-SD and Judita Lassakova to withdraw her candidacy for the post of Presov region governor.
In a video posted on social media, he expressed his belief that SNS and its candidate, Monika Leskova, will act in an "equally constructive" manner.
"To be honest, I'm very pleased about this; Milan Mazurek's chances of winning the election against current Presov region chair Milan Majersky (Christian Democrats/KDH) have increased dramatically as a result," said Uhrik, describing Mazurek as the only candidate capable of defeating Majersky. In this context, he therefore called on current Investment Minister Samuel Migal - who is standing as an independent for the post of Presov governor - to withdraw his candidacy. "Try to follow Ms Lassakova's example; you know you can't beat Milan Majersky," said Uhrik, calling for the uniting of "patriotic forces" in other towns and regions as well.
Lassakova was a candidate of Smer-SD and the Brothers of Slovakia party. Following her departure from the race, ten candidates are now running for Presov region governor: sole trader Drahomir Cureja (aged 46, Independent), entrepreneur Marian Geci (56, Independent), construction manager Lubomir Golias (49, Unity of Slavs), unemployed Jozef Istok (25, Independent), teaching assistant Zoltan Kaso (53, Team Kosice), district office head Monika Leskova (43, Slovak National Party/SNS), incumbent Presov region governor Milan Majersky (55, Christian Democratic Movement/KDH, 'Slovakia' party, Freedom and Solidarity/SaS, 'For the People', Conservatives - Christian Union, Progressive Slovakia), MEP Milan Mazurek (32, extra-parliamentary Republic party), Investment Minister Samuel Migal (44, Independent) and mayor Jan Stanko (55, Slovexit).
