Blanar: Slovakia Ready to Share Its Experience of Using Nuclear Energy

Vienna, 15 September (TASR) - Slovakia wishes to contribute actively to the work of international organisations and to draw on its long-standing experience in the field of nuclear energy and safety, Foreign and European Affairs Minister Juraj Blanar (Smer-SD) stated in his address on Monday (14 September) at the 70th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, TASR was told by the ministry's communications department. According to Slovakia's chief diplomat, at this session, Slovakia presented its positions regarding its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2028-2029, as well as for a seat on the IAEA Board of Governors for 2026–2028. Blanar pointed out that the decision on membership of the Board of Governors will be taken during this year's conference, which runs until Friday (18 September). Slovakia is the only candidate from the Eastern European regional group; its election is therefore expected to be by acclamation. "Slovakia is seen here as a responsible and reliable partner that has much to offer," said Blanar. Should Slovakia be elected, chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority Marta Ziakova is set to take up the post of governor on the IAEA Board of Governors. Slovakia has served on the IAEA Board of Governors four times, most recently between 2013-2015. It also chaired this governing body in 2014-2015. Blanar emphasised that nuclear energy accounts for more than 60 percent of domestic electricity generation and represents one of the pillars of Slovakia's energy security. Its peaceful use has long been one of Bratislava's priorities. "We're ready to share our experience with other countries and actively contribute to the work of international organisations," he stated. During his working visit to Vienna, the Slovak foreign minister also met with IAEA director general Rafael Grossi. They discussed current issues relating to the agency's work, including nuclear safety in Ukraine and the situation regarding Iran's nuclear programme. am
