Sutaj Estok Praises Team That Responded to Devastating Earthquake in Venezuela

Bratislava, 11 September (TASR) - Marking the 2026 Interior Ministry Day, Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok (Voice-SD) paid tribute to members of the Slovak rescue team, as well as experts who provided logistical, organisational and technical support during the international rescue mission in Venezuela, TASR was told by the ministry's strategic communications department on Friday. "On the recommendation of their immediate superiors and by order of the interior minister, members of the Slovak rescue team and a support team from the Interior Ministry's Crisis Management Section, Air Unit, and Fire and Rescue Corps were honoured. They received the awards for their exemplary commitment, professional conduct and selfless assistance in dealing with the aftermath of the devastating earthquake," stated the ministry, noting that the search and rescue operations were carried out under challenging conditions, in high temperatures and amidst extensive rubble. The Slovak rescue team, led by Zdenko Gasparik, was dispatched to earthquake-stricken Venezuela on 28 June of this year. It was made up of 20 experts and also included four specially trained search and rescue dogs. With the help of these dogs, location technology and other specialist equipment, it searched through collapsed buildings, located people buried under the rubble and carried out reconnaissance, marking out sectors for other international rescue teams. "Our rescue workers have once again shown that they are ready to help where it is most needed. Their courage, professionalism and willingness to put themselves on the line for the benefit of others deserve our sincere recognition and gratitude. Last but not least, they represented us all - our country. They deserve not only national but also international recognition. I'm proud of everyone who was part of this mission - whether directly in the rubble or as part of the team that made sure that it ran smoothly," said the interior minister. am/df
