President to Speak about AI Regulation in Arms Industry at UN General Assembly

Bled, 31 August (TASR-correspondent) - I intend to discuss, among other things, the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) in the arms industry at the September session of the UN General Assembly in New York, President Peter Pellegrini told reporters on Monday at the Bled Strategic Forum in Slovenia, adding that he supports the view that AI should be regulated, but not excessively. The topic was raised during a panel discussion with Pellegrini by Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar. The Slovak head of state said that, within the European Union, artificial intelligence is currently regulated in relation to data protection and the use of specific models, but not in the arms industry. "We aren't, in fact, addressing at a global level the regulation or restriction of the production of weapons capable of killing a person without human intervention, based on a photograph and a simple command from an operator," he pointed out. Pellegrini also warned that, in his view, excessive regulation would hinder the introduction of the very latest technologies where they are safe, within the European Union. In this context, he argued that Europe must also bear in mind its global competitiveness vis-à-vis the United States, China and India, which take a less strict approach to the regulation of modern technologies. am
