President: Matica Slovenska One of Pillars of National and Cultural Life

Bratislava, 4 August (TASR) - For more than a century and a half national heritage institution Matica Slovenska has been one of the pillars of our national and cultural life, President Peter Pellegrini posted on social media on Tuesday, adding that even today, its legacy serves as a reminder that a strong country is built on education, culture, respect for one's own roots and a sense of responsibility towards future generations. The head of state thanked everyone who helps to preserve Slovak traditions, history and cultural heritage. "Your work strengthens our awareness of who we are and the values on which our society is built. It is precisely this awareness of our own identity, mutual respect and a willingness to work for the common good that are the values helping Slovakia to move forward," he added. Matica Slovenska was founded in Turciansky Svaty Martin (Zilina region) on 4 August 1863. This was the culmination of efforts of generations of Slovaks to establish a nationwide association that would unite Slovaks across social and religious borders. The anniversary is commemorated every year on 4 August, the Memorial Day of Matica Slovenska. A respective law was adopted by MPs of the Slovak Parliament in October 1993. am/df
