Presov, 28 July (TASR) - Svetlana Pavlovicova will stand as the Smer-SD party's candidate for the post of mayor of Presov, party leader and Prime Minister Robert Fico announced at a press conference on Tuesday. According to Pavlovicova, the city needs a revival, and she believes that the cornerstones of this are the city's connections with its inhabitants and the business sector. "In Presov region it's precisely the city of Presov that needs a revival; it needs energy. I'd very much like to see elegance, strength and proper communication with the public return to Presov," said Pavlovicova, who currently serves as a councillor on Presov city council. She's also an adviser to the children's commissioner. "I believe that this combination of experience in regional politics, from her time working in the self-governing region, in national politics, in Parliament, and now her extensive experience in the field of social care and child welfare makes her an outstanding candidate," stated Fico. In addition to Pavlovicova, former mayor and current city and regional councillor Pavel Hagyari - running as an independent - and landscape architect and city councillor Rastislav Mochnacky, who will stand for election with the support of a coalition of parties including KDH, have announced that they are standing for the post of Presov mayor. The current mayor, Frantisek Olha, has also announced his candidacy and will be seeking voter support with the backing of Democrats and Progressive Slovakia. Artur Benes, a manager, entrepreneur, regional development expert and director of Presov region's Regional Development Agency, has announced his candidacy in the past few days. He's entering the election race as an independent candidate. The joint elections for local and regional authorities will take place on 24 October. am/df
