Transport Ministry: 'Bike to Work' Campaign Surpassed 15,000-participant Mark

Bratislava, 26 July (TASR) - The 'Bike to Work' campaign has completed its 13th year, with a total of 15,226 participants, 1,256 employers and 4,464 teams taking part in it, TASR has been told by spokesperson for the Transport Ministry Petra Polacikova. In all, the participants have covered almost 3 million kilometres by bike, on foot or by public transport, saving 671 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The aim of the campaign is to swap cars for bicycles, walking, public transport or a combination of these for the daily commute to work. In the 'Active Local Authority' category, the town of Dolny Kubin in Zilina region took first place, followed by the town of Sladkovicovo in Trnava region and the city of Trencin. Among employers with more than 250 employees, Vaillant Industrial Slovakia was this year's winner. It was followed by Bekaert Hlohovec, with the city of Trnava taking third place. In the category of employers with up to 249 employees, J.G. Tajovsky Primary School in Senec (Bratislava region) came out on top. Second place went to GGB Slovakia, while the village of Belusa (Trencin region) took third place. "The 'Bike to Work' campaign is bearing fruit. Many local authorities have recently built safe cycling infrastructure through the Recovery and Resilience Plan, thereby enabling their inhabitants and employees living in their areas to cycle, or to combine their journey with public transport, especially rail," said national cycling coordinator Peter Klucka. am/df
