KDH: Our EU Membership Doesn't Question Our Sovereignty in Ethical Matters

Bratislava, 26 July (TASR) - Slovakia's membership of the European Union (EU) doesn't call into question its sovereignty in cultural and ethical matters, so we see no reason to amend the section of the Constitution which states that, in matters of values and ethics, domestic law should take precedence over EU law, the opposition Christian Democrats (KDH) said on Sunday in response to the statement made by MP Maria Kolikova (Freedom and Solidarity/SaS) earlier in the day that the primacy of European law should apply here, given that we are part of the EU. "Such an explanation creates the false impression that the constitutional amendment drafted by KDH calls into question our EU membership or the general applicability of European law. I therefore recommend that Ms Kolikova should read the provision in question carefully once again. Nowhere does the amendment state that European law doesn't apply in Slovakia. It merely confirms the fact that the Slovak Republic retains, among other things, its sovereignty over cultural and ethical issues which haven't been transferred to the EU's jurisdiction," said KDH vice-chairman Viliam Karas. Kolikova spoke on JOJ 24's discussion programme 'Politika 24' (Politics 24) about the importance to amend the Constitution in the section dealing with Slovakia's sovereignty in matters of values, and cultural and ethical issues. "We're part of the European area and we want to remain so; therefore, the primacy of European law should apply here," she emphasised. am
