Banska Bystrica, 23 July (TASR) - Incumbent mayor of Banska Bystrica Jan Nosko will stand for re-election in the autumn local elections, TASR learnt at his briefing on Thursday, which he attended together with a team of candidates for city councillors. Nosko has held the post since 2014 and aims to bring stability, development and experience to the city and its inhabitants. He plans to run as an independent candidate. Nosko stated that 12 years ago he embarked on the difficult task of tackling problems that had long been neglected and put on hold. He pointed out that during his past three terms of office, a new bus station, a multi-storey car park next to the town hall and a bridge in the borough of Ilias have been built, while the local authority has carried out the refurbishment of old nursery and primary schools as well as the renovation of sports facilities. Banska Bystrica has also acquired ownership of several sites in the city. "I would go so far as to say that we're transforming Banska Bystrica, but working on major investment projects and implementing them in most cases extends beyond a single term of office," said Nosko. In the coming years, the current mayor would like to continue with the projects already underway, work on the further development of Banska Bystrica and complete the city's long-term transformation. As examples, he mentioned the planned revitalisation of the city park, the revitalisation of housing estate areas, the reconstruction of Strieborne Square and the restoration of the manor house in the borough of Radvan. Nosko is so far the fourth candidate to have officially announced a bid for the mayoral seat in Banska Bystrica. Also standing for the post is city councillor Diana Javorcikova, who is running with the support of the PS, Democrats, SaS and OKS parties; city councillor and architect Tomas Sobota, backed by the KDH and the Conservatives-Christian Union parties; and city councillor Matus Molitoris, who has also announced his interest in the mayoral role and intends to stand as an independent candidate. The joint elections for local and regional authorities are due to take place on 24 October. am/df
