Bratislava, 17 July (TASR) - The Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMU) recorded a record number of tropical nights in June, when overnight minimum air temperatures did not fall below 20 degrees Celsius, particularly at weather stations in western Slovakia and parts of the south-west of central Slovakia, SHMU reports on its website.
According to SHMU, the Bratislava-Koliba weather station recorded 12 tropical nights during the month. Bratislava Airport, Maly Javornik and Spany Laz each recorded seven, while Modra-Piesok, at the meteorological station near the astronomical observatory, Senica and Mochovce each recorded five. Piestany, Zikava and Hurbanovo each recorded four tropical nights.
The institute also noted that on 27 June this year the minimum air temperature at the Bratislava-Koliba weather station fell only to a record 26.3 degrees Celsius.
"This is the highest June minimum air temperature recorded within the SHMU meteorological network since 1951," it said.
On the same day, the minimum temperature at the Maly Javornik weather station fell to 24.9 degrees Celsius, the sixth-highest June minimum recorded in the SHMU network since at least 1951.
The previous nationwide June record for the highest minimum air temperature, valid until 27 June, had been recorded at the Kuchyna weather station.
SHMU added that further exceptionally high minimum temperatures were recorded on 29 June. At Bratislava-Koliba, the minimum temperature fell only to 25.8 degrees Celsius, the second-highest June minimum recorded in the network since at least 1951. At Maly Javornik, the minimum temperature was 25.6 degrees Celsius, which the institute said was the third-highest June minimum recorded in the network since at least 1951 and the highest ever recorded at that station in June.
