Kosice, 6 July (TASR) - Martin Mudrak, the opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) party's candidate for mayor of Kosice, will now enjoy the backing of Democrats and 'For the People', TASR learnt at a press conference held in Kosice on Monday.
"I greatly appreciate this support, and I'm really looking forward to cooperation that can take Kosice to a new era of collaboration and, at last, to the robust development that the people of Kosice deserve. This is proof that cooperation isn't just a slogan, as we're embarking on this journey today, meaning that this is the future of Kosice," said Mudrak, adding that cooperation is also open to the 'Slovakia' party, with discussions currently underway. Support has again been expressed in person by House vice-chair Martin Dubeci (PS).
According to Michal Kica from the extra-parliamentary Democrats party, this is "yet another example of growing cooperation among democratic parties within municipal politics".
Peter Huba from 'For the People' said that local government can't succeed without communication, cooperation and the ability to unite people.
In addition to Mudrak, Ladislav Lorinc, the current mayor of the Kosice borough of Sidlisko KVP, has already announced his candidacy for Kosice mayor on behalf of the Kosice Party. Lenka Kovacevicova, the current mayor of Kosice's 'Nad Jazerom' borough, is also standing. Jaroslav Polacek, who is serving his second term as Kosice mayor, will run for re-election with the support of a coalition of six parties, including the Christian Democrats (KDH), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), Nova, the Hungarian Alliance, the Roma Coalition Party, and DS-ODS. Meanwhile, Miroslav Sabol will run as an independent candidate.
Combined elections for municipal authorities and regional self-government authorities are scheduled to take place on 24 October.
