Zlate Moravce, 2 July (TASR) - Smer-SD party MP and chair of the House foreign affairs committee Marian Kery officially announced at a press conference in Nitra on Thursday that he'll run for the post of mayor of Zlate Moravce (Nitra region) as the joint candidate of Smer-SD, Voice-SD, the Slovak National Party (SNS) and 'We Are Family'. According to Smer-SD leader and Prime Minister Robert Fico, Kery can bring activities to the town that go beyond the framework of a standard district centre. "I'm talking about various foreign policy initiatives. If he combines all the experience and opportunities that he has, along with links to high-level politics and the government, this is a fantastic chance and opportunity for Zlate Moravce," said Fico. Kery said that one of his strengths is that he served three terms as a municipal councillor and has been a Nitra region councillor continuously since 2005, in addition to being an MP since 2012. At the same time, he confirmed that he won't run for the post of a Nitra regional councillor in the municipal elections in October of this year. As mayor, he'd like to build on the work of incumbent mayor Dusan Husar in certain areas. "I highly respect the current mayor, who has decided not to run again. We get along well personally, but there is naturally an age gap, and we have different views on some issues. I want to continue with the good things, and in some other areas I have my own vision and an innovative approach that I want to offer," stated Kery. In addition to Kery, current vice-mayor of Zlate Moravce Marek Holub, town councillor Martin Kovac, as well as Denisa Uhrinova and Vojtech Hucka have so far announced their interest in running for Zlate Moravce mayor. Combined elections for municipal authorities and regional self-government authorities are scheduled to take place on 24 October. jrg/df
