Bratislava, 20 June (TASR) - More than 1 million people went to cinemas to watch Slovak movies last year, with the total figure reaching 1,058,032, according to a Report on the State of the Slovak Audiovisual Industry in 2025 prepared by the Creative Europe Desk Slovakia. It released the 23rd such report in cooperation with the Slovak Film Institute (SFU). The publication provides a comprehensive overview of developments in Slovakia's audiovisual sector last year. Its author, film publicist Miroslav Ulman divided its contents into 17 thematic chapters covering legislation, film education, film production, the Audiovisual Fund, the Literary Fund, MEDIA, Eurimages, cinema distribution, video distribution, cinemas, film clubs, domestic festivals and showcases, awards received by Slovak films and filmmakers in Slovakia and abroad, SFU, television, and an in memoriam section. According to Ulman, 2025 brought some negative, but also some positive news. Among the negatives was a significant decline in the number of Slovak movie premieres. "A total of 36 Slovak films were produced, which is 21 percent fewer than the 46 films produced in 2023 and 2024," reads the report. Ulman also noted that 42 Slovak films were premiered in Slovak cinemas last year, accounting for 14 percent of all films listed in the release schedule of the Film Distributors' Association. "As many as 363 films were premiered in Slovak cinemas in 2025, which is still an extremely high figure. In practice it means that one film was premiered in Slovak distribution every day," said Ulman. "On one hand, the number of Slovak films is decreasing, but on the other, they are still high quality with an international reputation and enjoy popularity among domestic audiences," stated Ulman, adding that only next year will show whether these trends are lasting or just seasonal fluctuations. ko/df/jrg
