SNS Calls for Time Limit Between Charges and Indictments

Bratislava, 17 June (TASR) - Coalition junior party SNS is calling for a statutory time limit between a person being charged and subsequently indicted, and says it will push for the change, party leader and House vice-chair Andrej Danko said at a press conference on Wednesday. "There is a big difference between charging someone and indicting them. We want the police authorities conducting pre-trial proceedings to have a deadline. It is unacceptable for someone to remain charged or under indictment for three, four or five years without being able to get their case before a court," he said. Danko underlined that SNS does not want to impose time limits on court proceedings themselves. "A time limit should be set between a charge and an indictment, or the verification of the alleged offence. In my view, that period should be no longer than one year, or two years in exceptional cases," he said, adding that the police should better "get cracking". mf
