Bratislava, 17 June (TASR) - European Union enlargement, the future EU budget, security and defence, competitiveness, and developments in Ukraine and the Middle East were among the main issues discussed by Foreign and European Affairs Minister Juraj Blanar (Smer-SD) and ambassadors of EU member states accredited to Slovakia, TASR learnt from the ministry's press department on Wednesday. The meeting, attended by the head of the European Commission Representation in Slovakia, took place on Tuesday (16 June) at the initiative of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. "Slovakia wants to be a constructive partner in the European debate, openly communicating its positions while seeking common solutions. The European Union is currently facing crucial decisions on the budget, security, enlargement and competitiveness, which is why it is important to maintain an open dialogue with our partners," Blanar said. The ministry said that the future EU Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034 was the fulcrum of the discussion. The Slovak foreign minister stressed that maintaining a strong cohesion policy and the Common Agricultural Policy remains a priority for Slovakia. He also supported the objective of reaching agreement on the future budget by the end of 2026 in order to avoid delays in launching new programmes and drawing EU funds. Participants also discussed EU enlargement and developments in the Western Balkans. In this context, Blanar welcomed the positive momentum in the accession process, including the opening of the first negotiating cluster with Ukraine and Moldova. During discussions on Ukraine, the minister reiterated that Slovakia supports Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, as well as all diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a just and sustainable peace. Slovakia is also continuing its humanitarian, energy and development assistance to the country. Participants further discussed current security challenges and efforts to strengthen European defence capabilities. According to the ministry, participants also welcomed the agreement reached to end the military conflict between the United States and Iran and praised the continuation of diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilising the situation in the Middle East. The meeting formed part of the traditional consultation format between Slovakia's foreign and European affairs minister and heads of diplomatic missions from EU member states during the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU. mf
