Voice-SD Admits It Might Submit Separate Proposal for Referendum

Bratislava, 15 June (TASR) - The coalition Voice-SD party acknowledges that it may submit a separate proposal at the September parliamentary session to introduce the option of shortening the electoral term of Parliament via a referendum, House Chair Richard Rasi (Voice-SD) stated on Monday, adding that it would like to do so if it fails to push through this change via an amendment to its proposal to extend the electoral term of local authorities.
"The opposition would support it even now. The problem is that they were ordered not to support this proposal. Now they have the excuse that there is also [a proposal for] a five-year term of office [for local authorities], and so it would pass with that as well, but if there weren't individual instructions for each MP, I think that nine out of ten opposition MPs would certainly support this proposal. "And that's why, if it doesn't pass now, we'll give them a chance to express their views purely on the referendum question at the next House session," he told reporters in Parliament.
