8. júna 2026 13:04
Zilina, 8 June (TASR) - Speaking at a press briefing in Zilina on Monday, incumbent city mayor Peter Fabiane announced that he'll run for re-election in this year's municipal elections in autumn as an independent candidate, with top representatives of opposition parties Progressive Slovakia (PS), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and Democrats also attending the briefing to express support for his candidacy. "Today, I'm running for the post of Zilina mayor for the third and, to say it openly, also the last time," said Fabiane, who has been at the helm as Zilina mayor since 2018. "Those who know me are aware that I'm an athlete and a long-distance runner, and that I tend to accelerate towards the finish. And that's exactly what I want to offer to the people of Zilina for the upcoming term – a fast and determined finish, with significant acceleration in key areas," added Fiabane. He plans to rely on a strong team of candidates for councillors offered by the coalition of four centre-right parties. "This alliance gives Zilina the chance that the future city council will be united and capable of pushing through even complex solutions with greater vigour than before, and that Zilina will enjoy strong support for its ambitions from the national and parliamentary levels as well," said Fiabane. He wants to focus on areas and projects that are most relevant for the people of Zilina, such as affordable housing, transport and parking, greenery, clean and high-quality public spaces and even safer streets. In addition to Fabiane's bid, candidacies for the post of Zilina mayor have previously been announced by city and regional councillor Peter Cibulka, doctor and regional councillor Rastislav Johanes, and businessman Miroslav Sokol. The municipal elections for local government bodies and bodies of self-governing regions are slated to be held on 24 October of this year, although this hasn't been officially announced yet by Parliamentary Speaker Richard Rasi (Voice-SD). jrg/df
