Poprad, 6 June (TASR) - The summer charter flights season kicked off at Poprad Airport this week, with passengers now enjoying the largest selection of flights in the airport's history, said airport executive director Jan Pitonak earlier this week, adding that the first 230 holidaymakers departed for Monastir, Tunisia on Tuesday (2 June).
During the summer season, the airport expects to see more than 150 charter flights to the most popular destinations, such as Turkey, Bulgaria and Tunisia, with Greece coming back after a ten-year hiatus. Moreover, a new charter connection to Cyprus will be launched, while the route to Tel Aviv has been resumed after seven years.
"In the modern history of the airport, this will be the broadest range of flights that we've prepared with our tour operators and travel agencies. The market is showing a slowdown in interest in demand for air holidays, especially for those with a higher price tag," said Pitonak, expressing his hope that passengers have grown fond of the convenience of sitting in the departure lounge within an hour of leaving home.
During the peak of the season, flights from Poprad to Antalya will operate up to six times a week, cementing Turkey's position as the busiest holiday destination from Poprad.
The airport selected the new summer destinations based on a survey among passengers who have long been looking to go to Greece and Cyprus, which is also how the airport is trying to expand its catchment area. "Our strategy is to cover the south, west and north, including southern Poland. A car journey of up to 1.5 hours by is still considered comfortable for travellers," added Pitonak.
According to Patrik Frantiska, chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Operating Officer of the airport, a 30-percent year-on-year increase in the number of charter flights is expected.
