Bratislava, 5 June (TASR) - The Hungarian Alliance wants to field its own candidate for the post of Nitra region governor in the autumn regional elections, party leader Laszlo Gubik announced on TASR TV's programme Studio TASR, adding that discussions on a specific candidate are still ongoing.
Gubik acknowledged that even his own name has been mentioned.
"We'll definitely have to nominate our own candidate in Nitra region. Discussions are still under way. My name has also been mentioned. We don't have many days left to reach a final decision," he said.
Gubik also announced that the Hungarian Alliance supports Juraj Droba as the candidate for region governor in Bratislava region and Ondrej Lunter in Banska Bystrica region.
"We'll see what happens in Trnava Region, but traditionally we have our own candidate there, although cooperation with Jozef Viskupic is excellent," he said.
The Hungarian Alliance's approach in Kosice region remains open. "There are a great many candidates there. Our people have had good experience with the current governor, Rastislav Trnka, and there have been many results over the past four years. We'll see whether we'll continue on this path, whether an agreement can be reached with another candidate, or whether we'll have our own candidate," he added.
The Hungarian Alliance leader also pointed out that his party currently has the highest number of regional councillors of any political party, despite being represented in only five regions and not in the national Parliament.
"This is a political anomaly which, in my view, doesn't exist in any other member state of the European Union," he commented.
According to Gubik, this raises the question of whether the current electoral system is functioning properly.
