Bratislava, 31 May (TASR) - The Defence Ministry has prepared a long-term military development plan extending to 2040, envisaging the modernisation of small arms, tanks, howitzers, aircraft, helicopters and other equipment, with the plan intended to replace the army development strategy currently in force.
The proposal emerged from a document submitted by the ministry for interdepartmental consultation.
"Priority in the field of armaments will be given to completing projects already under way, particularly in the areas of air defence capabilities, fighter aviation, tracked and wheeled combat vehicles for the combat battalions of the 1st and 2nd Mechanised Brigades, heavy trucks to strengthen the logistical capabilities of the Slovak Armed Forces, as well as multi-purpose helicopters to enhance transport capabilities (including the transport of special forces) and fire support," the ministry stated in the document.
In addition to modernising equipment, the ministry also aims to develop personnel. It plans to have 19,300 soldiers by the end of 2032, with the figure expected to exceed 25,000 eight years later.
The document also refers to the National Defence Forces and Gendarmerie Corps projects.
"The National Defence Forces project has changed the system for building reserve forces for the Slovak Armed Forces. In the event of a crisis situation or conflict, trained reserves will be used to reinforce active military units and to create a mobilised 3rd Mechanised Brigade and an Infantry Brigade," reads the text.
The document also envisages the development of training, leadership skills and infrastructure.
